Focus

Musculoskeletal tumors produce characteristically major clinical problems because of their low incidence in combination with their variation of clinical significance from irrelevant to life threatening. Imaging plays a pivotal role in selecting appropriate cost-effective treatment by characterizing these lesions, in selecting diagnostic categories with therapeutic consequences, in staging, in image guided thermocoagulation, in monitoring systemic therapy, and in detecting recurrent disease following treatment. Our research has focused mainly on morphologic imaging to allow diagnosis, percutaneous treatment and staging, while now we will, based on imaging techniques displaying angiogenesis, focus on monitoring therapy by phenotyping these tumors during systemic therapy. Some of these MR techniques (diffusion tensor imaging and diffusion imaging) will in addition be used to further improve staging.

Study populations

An important basis for clinical research is the large clinical volume in the LUMC, the participation in European treatment trials, and the collaboration with the Leiden based Netherlands committee on Bone Tumors.

Collaborative networks

Research on the topic of musculoskeletal neoplasms and tumor-like lesions is performed in close collaboration with the departments of Pathology, Prof.dr. P.C.W. Hoogendoorn, Orthopedics Prof.dr. R.G.H.H. Nelissen, Clinical Oncology, Prof.dr. A.J. Gelderblom, and the Netherlands Committee on Bone Tumors.  See also: chondrosarcoma
