Dr.ir. Bart (B.L.) Kaptein

Senior Researcher

  • biomechanical engineer

Bart Kaptein is senior researcher at the Department of Orthopaedics of Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC). He is active in the Biomechanics and Imaging Group (BIG) and the Division of Image Processing at the Department of Radiology (LKEB). His interests are in Orthopaedics and image processing.
After finishing his Ph.D. thesis entitled: "Towards in vivo parameter estimation for a musculoskeletal model of the human shoulder" in Delft, he started at the LUMC on the development of model-based roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis (RSA) in a project together with the LKEB. The model-based RSA method transformed RSA from an academic tool to an accessible tool for early clinical evaluation of new prosthesis designs. Model-based RSA is now used in more than 100 clinical and experimental studies all over the world.
Within the LUMC, he started an RSA core-lab that supports clinical RSA studies in The Netherlands and abroad and for the international RSA research network, he co-chaired the second international RSA meeting in April 2011 and is currently a board member of the International Radiostereometry Society.
