During a pancreas transplantation the sick pancreas is replaced by a healthy pancreas from a donor. Your own kidney and/or pancreas are not removed. Sometimes only the pancreas is transplanted, sometimes also the kidney. In the latter case we speak of a combined kidney-pancreas transplantation. The LUMC is one of the two Dutch university medical centers where these operations are performed.
The LUMC as a centre of expertise
Over the years doctors of the LUMC have gained much expertise and experience in (kidney-) pancreas transplantations. Since 1984 more than four hundred pancreas transplantations have been performed, whether or not in combination with a kidney transplantation.
