Renée Allaart studied medicine at the University of Leiden . She acquired her medical degree in 1987, followed by a PhD degree in 1994 on the thesis “Hereditary deficiencies in protein C and protein S” (promotores prof. dr E. Briët and prof. dr R.M. Bertina, department of Hematology, Leiden University Medical Center ). She has specialized in internal medicine (qualification in 1998) and rheumatology (qualification in 2001).
Since 2001 she is associate professor at the department of rheumatology, working as head of the clinical research unit and as supervisor on the internal medicine/rheumatology ward of the Leiden University Medical Center . Her current research interest is treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, with focus on treatment strategies in early RA and new therapies. She is the principle investigator of the BeSt study (‘treatment strategies in rheumatoid arthritis’) and the IMPROVED study (‘induction therapy with methotrexate and prednisone in rheumatoid or very early disease’).
She is married and has 2 daughters.
