Simon Mooijaart is a registrar in internal medicine, with a focus on geriatrics. At present, he is director of the Institute for Evidence-based Medicine in Old Age | IEMO.
After receiving his MD in 2002 (LUMC) he obtained a position as a PhD student at the Department of Gerontology and Geriatrics. His PhD thesis was titled "Genetic Determinants of Healthy Longevity" (December 2007).
From 2006 through 2011 he was a resident in Internal Medicine, of which the last one and a half years he spent on the Gerontology and Geriatrics at the LUMC. Since the beginning of his residency he combined this work with science at the same department. As a principle investigator in the Netherlands Consortium for Healthy Ageing, he studied the metabolic determinants of healthy longevity, with a special focus on interventions to improve healthy ageing and prevention of cognitive decline. He initiated the "Actief en Gezond Oud (AGO)", a randomized controlled clinical trial among 60 to 70 year olds, into the effect of an internet based program to enhance physical activity on (glucose) metabolism.
Since May 2011 he is the director of the Institute for Evidence-based Medicine in Old Age | IEMO. IEMO aims to improve the quality of healthcare for older people by substantiating the evidence for their treatment. At present, Simon Mooijaart coordinates two IEMO projects in which all eight Dutch UMC's participate and TNO and NIVEL. One is a classical randomized controlled trial among participants of 80 years and older with subclinical hypothyroidism, the second is a project on the use of innovative technology and methodology in research in older people.
