Dr. Braat studied Medicine at the University of Leiden. During his study he spent one year for transplantation research at the University of California at San Francisco. In 2000 he started his surgical training at the University of Groningen, followed by a 2-year transplantation fellowship of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons at the University of California at San Francisco. He wrote his thesis on ‘Sentinel node procedure in colorectal cancer’. In 2007 he became a staff member of the Department of Surgery at the Leiden University Medical Center. His surgical expertise includes; liver, kidney and pancreas transplantation, laparoscopic procedures and hepatobiliary surgery. He is involved in transplantation surgery training and quality control. His main scientific interest includes; donor risk indices and outcome prediction and improving graft preservation.
