Dr. Jutte de Vries is a clinical virologist and assistant professor at the LUMC dept. of Medical Microbiology, the Netherlands.
She obtained several Masters degrees at the Leiden University: Biomedical Sciences (2000), Doctor of Medicine (2002), and Clinical Epidemiology B (2013). After her training as Medical Microbiologist at the University Medical Center in Groningen (2003-2008), she became a Fellow Clinical Virology at the Leiden University Medical Center (2008-2012) and wrote her thesis entitled: “Congenital cytomegalovirus infection: disease burden and screening tools -Towards newborn screening-“ (2012). After her PhD, she retained staff member clinical virology at the LUMC dept. of Medical Microbiology (to date), with several coordinating function including: head of the serology laboratory unit, staff member accreditation, and coordinator of the half minor Infections in Health and Disease.
Since 2016 she leads a group working on Viral Metagenomics, aiming at pathogen detection in clinical samples by both shotgun and targeted metagenomic next-generation sequencing. Other goals are to study the human virome in health and disease, viral resistance, typing, and virus discovery by metagenomic sequencing. The focus is on patients with encephalitis, viral respiratory infections, fever in travellers and immunocompromised (pediatric and adult) patients. The ultimate goal of their work is to improve virus identification in undiagnosed patients suspected of an infectious disease.
Dr. de Vries is board member of the Dutch Working group Clinical Virology (NWKV), and co-initiator and coordinator of the European Society of Clinical Virology (ESCV)-network on NGS (ENNGS), aiming at implementation of NGS in the clinical diagnostic laboratory, for pathogen detection and typing.
