Introduction

The Image-Guided Surgery group at Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), headed by Dr. Vahrmeijer, focuses on clinical studies on near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence image-guidance in cancer surgery. He closely collaborates with Prof. Frangioni who developed the FLARE and mini-FLARE NIR fluorescence imaging systems, which are both used in clinical trials at the LUMC in over 300 patients. His current research focuses on the introduction of image-guided surgery using clinically available probes and on the clinical introduction of novel probes, like ZW800, in collaboration with Prof. Frangioni. Together with Prof van de Velde, and Prof. Frangioni, he aims at disseminating this technique to collaborating hospitals all over the world. Dr. Vahrmeijer was awarded with a clinical cancer research award from the Dutch Cancer Society to implement image-guided surgery in daily clinical practice, and is involved in several large research projects, funded by the Center for Translational Molecular Medicine (CTMM). He received his M.D. and Ph.D. in Leiden and is an attending surgical oncologist at the Department of Sugery.
