Refractive surgery helps to overcome defects in refraction with the aim to make people independent of glasses or contact lenses. Implantation of a lens in the anterior chamber is specific type of refractive surgery, with which the LUMC has much experience.
Optimal diagnosis of corneal conditions depends on new techniques. Use is made of echography, fluorophotometry, anterior segment angiography, pentacam and Visante investigations, and confocal imaging to identify refractive aberrations and underlying corneal diseases. Special attention is given to angiography of scleral vessels in corneal and scleral inflammatory disease: improvement of diagnosis of autoimmune and infectious corneal and scleral diseases and subsequent treatment is essential, as optimal treatment at an early stage may prevent the necessity of corneal surgery later on.
