Macular degeneration is the main cause of blindness in adults in the western world. The LUMC is a large regional and national referral center for diagnosis and treatment of macular degeneration. During the last few years, enormous changes have taken place with regard to the treatment of macular degeneration, with the introduction of photodynamic therapy, and the development of angiogenesis inhibitors. Research focuses on the safety and effectiveness of these newly developed treatments, and on the tailored treatments for specific patients. In addition to age-related macular degeneration, special attention is given to macular edema due to diabetis and macular occlusion.
