Alfred Vertegaal studied Biomedical Sciences at the LeidenUniversity from 1991 until 1996. In 1995, a research project was carried out at the Department of Genetics of st. Jude Children’s ResearchHospital in Memphis, U.S.A. under the supervision of Dr. Gerard Grosveld. He received his Ph.D. from the LeidenUniversity in 2001 based on a research project supervised by Prof.Dr. Alex van der Eb and Dr. Alt Zantema. In 2001, he joined the laboratory of Prof.Dr. Angus Lamond, FRS, at the Wellcome Trust Biocentre in Dundee, U.K., where he initiated a project to purify and identify novel target proteins for Small Ubiquitin-like MOdifiers (SUMOs). An independent research line on SUMO signal transduction was initiated in 2004 in the Department of Molecular Cell Biology at the LeidenUniversityMedicalCenter . Alfred received a fellowship from the Dutch Cancer Society (KWF), a VENI, VIDI, VICI, ECHO, Horizon and Zenith grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and a starting grant from the European Research Council (ERC).
