associate professor

Area(s) of interest

Introduction

During his PhD research (1977-1992) in the group of Prof. A.J.M. Berns (the Netherlands Cancer Institute), Niels de Wind performed genetic screens of the α-herpesvirus genome. From 1992-1994 he received an EMBO long-term postdoctoral fellowship to identify and characterize genes involved in DNA mismatch repair in mammalian cells, in the group of Prof. M. Radman, Institut Jacques Monod, Paris. In 1994 he was postdoc at the Netherlands Cancer Institute to generate mouse models with defects in the DNA mismatch repair genes (group of Prof. H. te Riele). In 1998 he became group leader and assistant professor at the department of Toxicogenetics, Leiden University Medical Center (now Human Genetics). In 2006 he became associate professor at the Department of Toxicogenetics. His research group aims at understanding the consequences of replication stress and of genome instability for fitness and disease. He receives funding from different agencies, including the Dutch Cancer Society, European Union and the National Institutes of Health. He is associate editor of DNA Repair journal and member of the editorial board of Mutation Research journal.
