Admission to the programme is open to those who have completed a prior education approved by the VvE, with sufficient content regarding health and diseases, for example medicine, biomedical sciences, and biopharmaceutical sciences (see www.epidemiology.nl for details). The programme consists of mandatory courses stated in the training guide, supplemented with a number of optional modules. A 12-month internship at the department of Clinical Epidemiology is also part of the programme for those who work in departments other than the department of Clinical Epidemiology.

The programme is offered customarily to all PhD students working at the department of Clinical Epidemiology. Each year, a small number of PhD students or postdocs from other departments are enrolled in the programme. Those who are interested should send an application letter (with photo) to the programme directors (via the secretariat: thmcwienen@lumc.nl ). The application includes resumé, the form regarding the individual course planning together with a supporting letter from the head of department. The relevant forms are at the bottom of this page. Applications can be submitted twice a year: deadlines are April 1 and October 1.

The programme consists of the following parts: courses, an academic dissertation, at least four scientific publications regarding epidemiological research, an epidemiological portfolio, and practical research experience at the department of Clinical Epidemiology. The programme usually takes 3 to 4 years to complete. During this period, time is spent on courses in epidemiology and statistics (approximately 25 ECTS). The dissertation (as well as the scientific publications) must have an epidemiological signature. During the 12 months working at the department of Clinical Epidemiology (for candidates from other departments), research will be conducted under the supervision of one or more staff members of the department (on a subject to be agreed upon that fits with the candidate’s own research). Progress is evaluated annually with the programme directors

Courses without being enrolled in the programme

It is also possible to participate in some of the courses, without being formally trained to become Epidemiologist B. Specifically, the course Study designs and their Application in epidemiological Research Training (START) is also open to participants who are not enrolled in the program.
