Professional biosketch

Associate professor Lisette van Lieshout (1964) is heading the Leiden Clinical Parasitology Group within the Department of Parasitology, Center of Infectious Diseases, Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC). She received her MSc in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Amsterdam in 1987 and her PhD on immunodiagnosis of schistosomiasis at the LUMC in 1996.  She joined the Department of Parasitology at the LUMC in 1991 after spending three years of research at Naval American Medical Research Unit No. 3, Cairo, Egypt.

Her research experience is in the application of new diagnostic tools to study the epidemiology of human parasitic infections. She has been involved in a number of different projects in Africa and other low-income regions around the world, mostly dealing with diagnosis and epidemiology of stool parasites. In 1999 she received the Merial Award for her innovative contributions to the fields of medical parasitology within the Benelux. She is co-author of more than 100 research papers on parasite diagnostics, focussing mainly on molecular detection of parasites in clinical specimens and the immune-diagnosis of schistosomiasis and she presents her work regularly at scientific conferences and meetings.

Besides research she teaches in medical parasitology and Global Health. Since 2014 she is the coordinator of LUMC Half Minor in Global Health. She also coordinates specialized training courses on laboratory diagnosis of parasitic diseases, both on national and international level.

Seconded to the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory (KML), she is a senior consultant in laboratory diagnosis of parasitic infections.  Also at a national level she is active in the field of medical parasitology. From 2002 till 2007 she was member of the board of the Netherlands Society for Parasitology. Since 2012 she is secretary of the parasitology section of the national Dutch external quality assessment scheme (SKML), which she chaired from 2002-2012.
