Dr. B.G.A. (Bruno) Guigas

I am a molecular biologist with a broad expertise in the pathophysiology of metabolic disorders. My research group at the Leiden University Medical Center is driving projects within the field of immunometabolism aiming to identify new druggable molecules and/or molecular targets involved in the immune regulation of metabolic homeostasis in the context of obesity, NAFLD/NASH, type 2 diabetes and infection. I am also actively involved in several international collaborations on multidisciplinary projects dealing with metabolic disorders and helminth infection. I have co-authored >100 publications (h-index:48) and am serving as external reviewer for multiple journals (>150 publications) and national/EU funding agencies (>120 grants). Additionally, I am a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of Valbiotis, a French biotech developing innovative plant-derived molecules for preventing metabolic syndrome.

My group mainly focused on studying the molecular mechanisms underlying the immune-mediated regulation of metabolic homeostasis, notably by parasites and their molecules, using both in vitro and in vivo approaches in various rodent models or in humans. This original research line is aimed to identify new molecules and/or potential novel molecular targets involved in tissue-specific regulation of glucose/lipid metabolism and insulin sensitivity that can ultimately lead to future therapeutic opportunities for the treatment of metabolic disorders and hyperinflammatory diseases.
