Dr. Nina de Groot joined the Department of Medical Ethics & Health Law in August 2025. She obtained her PhD in Philosophy at VU University Amsterdam. Her PhD project entitled 'The Shared Self: Genomic Information between Bioethics, Data Ethics, and Politics' was funded by an individual grant of the Dutch Research Council (NWO). Her interdisciplinary research focuses on the intersection between data ethics, bioethics, privacy studies, and governance. Before starting her PhD project, she worked as a medical doctor and teacher in Psychiatry at the Amsterdam University Medical Centre. She holds a Master in Medicine (University of Amsterdam) and a Master in Philosophy (VU University Amsterdam). At the LUMC, she is a member of various HRI working groups and the institutional review board on biobank research.
Wetenschappelijk onderzoek
Research interests include philosophical foundations of privacy, biotechnologies, commercialization, biobanks, health data protection, and law enforcement use of commercial DNA databases and its ethical, legal, and social-political implications. Her work is published in multiple (inter)national journals, such as Big Data & Society, Journal of Medical Ethics, The American Journal of Bioethics, Digital Society and Nederlands Juristenblad. She also presented her research findings in the public debate, including in Nieuwsuur, NRC, and Met het Oog op Morgen.
