Leon is the head of Sequencing Analysis Support Core (SASC) which is a core facility at LUMC to support LUMC researchers and clinicians to analyze their Next Generation Sequencing data. SASC team focuses on building effective data analysis pipelines by selecting and integrating algorithms and tools. Solutions developed at SASC are scalable and extensible. To address the challenge on data computation and storage, SASC have access to both the LUMC local computer cluster and Cloud based infrastructure such as SURF research cloud and Amazon/Google cloud.
Leon received his PhD in Computer Science from University Twente in 2010. Between 2010 and 2014, he has been working at the Netherlands Bioinformatics Center as a senior system integration engineer and the NGS task force leader. Leon developed multiple text-mining applications using domain specific ontologies and led a cross-center development of NGS interest group in the Netherlands.

Wetenschappelijk onderzoek
Leon’s current research interests are in big omics data infrastructure, federated learning using Personal Health Train, NGS pipeline and workflow frameworks, transcriptomics data analysis, long read sequencing analysis, single cell genomics/transcriptomics, non-coding RNA regulation, AI and Large Language model and their application in genomics and transcriptomics research.
Leon has chaired the NGS interest group of the Netherlands national initiatives such as NBIC and DTL for 10 years and has been leading and involved the data management tasks in several national projects, e.g., BBMRI-BIOS, BBMRIomics, X-omics, ZonMW-NCDC. His team won the Dutch data prize 2018 for the data management work in the BBMRIomics project.
