Introductie

Dr.ir. Thijs van Osch is professor in de afdeling Radiologie van het LUMC alsmede vice-director van het C.J. Gorter Center for high-field MRI. Zijn onderzoek richt zich voornamelijk op de ontwikkeling en toepassing van nieuwe MRI technieken om de hersendoorbloeding te meten en de kwaliteit van het microvasculaire bed af te beelden. In het begin van zijn carrière deed hij vooral onderzoek naar perfusiemethodes die gebruik maken van de injectie van contrastmiddel, maar meer recent maakt hij gebruik van de zogenaamde “arterial spin labeling MRI" methode welke compleet niet-invasief de doorbloeding meet. Nieuwe technieken die door zijn onderzoeksgroep geïntroduceerd zijn, zijn onder andere acceleration selective ASL en superselective pCASL. Daarnaast was hij de technische projectleider van de installatie van een humane 7 Tesla MRI scanner in het LUMC. Zijn onderzoek op de 7 Tesla MRI scanner behelst de optimalisatie van hoog-resolutie anatomische scans en het corrigeren van artefacten veroorzaakt door fysiologische ruis. In totaal is hij (co)auteur van meer dan 200 peer-reviewed publicaties. Recent, doet hij veel onderzoek naar het zogenaamde glymfatische systeem dat zorg draagt voor de afvoer van afvalstoffen uit de hersenen.
