Data Management Specialist
You have 20 more days to apply
About your role
Within LUMC, you work with research data that directly contributes to scientific research and improvements in healthcare. Large volumes of data are collected every day from clinical studies, experimental research, quality registries and patient care. The quality and usability of this data strongly depend on how information is structured, described and made findable and accessible.
Your work focuses on building and maintaining research data infrastructures within the OBiBa framework, consisting of Opal, Mica and Agate , an open-source data warehouse that can be interfaced with R and Python. You work with various data sources and ensure that research data remains reliable, reusable and easy to find in line with the FAIR principles. You also support researchers in structuring data and translating research questions into suitable data solutions.
You work closely with data engineers, data stewards and Opal data managers, among others. In addition, you collaborate extensively with biomedical researchers, physicians and clinicians. Technology plays an important role, but understanding underlying research questions being able to translate that into database schemas is just as important. The combination of technical depth and close collaboration makes the work varied and intellectually challenging.
Your main responsibilities include:
- Building and maintaining research data infrastructures within the OBiBa framework
- Writing and managing scripts, preferably in R, to optimize data flows
- Connecting data sources, including Castor EDC and HiX, and monitoring data quality
- Supporting researchers in structuring, managing and making research data accessible
The work environment is defined by collaboration, technical innovation and a strong connection between data, research and patient care.
About your workplace
Leiden University Medical Center is an academic hospital where patient care, research and education are closely connected. Within LUMC, you will be part of Biomedical Data Sciences (BDS), where data, technology and scientific research come together every day. The Advanced Data Management (ADM) team supports researchers in building sustainable and secure research data infrastructures based on FAIR principles.
Working within ADM means working in an environment where innovation and collaboration are central. You work closely with data engineers, data stewards, researchers and other specialists, where making research data accessible and reusable is truly a team effort. The culture is characterized by involvement, intellectual depth and a willingness to actively share knowledge. There is plenty of room to ask questions, contribute ideas and help build future-proof data solutions for research and healthcare.
About you
Maintaining oversight in complex data and research environments characterizes the way you work. Even when multiple projects and interests come together, you continue to set priorities carefully and communicate clearly. Collaborating with researchers, physicians and data specialists comes naturally, while translating technical questions into practical solutions. Curiosity about data, innovation and clinical research motivates you to keep developing yourself. Attention to detail, analytical thinking and a strong sense of quality form the foundation of your work.
In addition, you bring:
- A master’s degree or PhD in Medical Informatics, Data Science, Biomedical Sciences, Medical Biology or a related field
- Strong programming skills in R; knowledge of Python is considered a plus
- Experience with data management, database design and FAIR principles
- Preferably experience within a clinical research environment or with OBiBa software, such as Opal and Mica
