About your role
Using causal inference methods, you will transform large-scale real-world data into evidence that informs clinical guidelines and improves healthcare and population health. You have the opportunity to build your own research line, with potential to grow into a Principal Investigator role. You will start with a temporary appointment, with the intention and opportunity to transition to a permanent position.
Your main responsibilities include:
- Applying advanced causal inference methods to large-scale healthcare datasets to answer important medical research questions.
- Developing and expanding causal inference methods for real-world (observational) datasets.
- Collaborating with health scientists within the Caecilia Institute and with partners from other disciplines.
- Publishing research findings in leading scientific journals and presenting them at international conferences.
- Teaching and co-supervision of students
- Write funding applications (e.g. ZonMw, NWO and disease-specific foundations)
About your workplace
This position is based within the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and the Causal Inference Centre, both part of the Caecilia Institute for Population Health and Data Sciences at Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC). The Causal Inference Centre brings together leading experts from a range of disciplines to develop and apply advanced causal inference methods. Together, they work towards a common goal: improving the understanding, prevention and treatment of disease.

About you
Collaboration comes naturally and you enjoy working with researchers from different disciplines. You approach scientific questions with an analytical, critical, and careful mindset, always questioning assumptions and methodological choices to ensure rigor. Complex methodological concepts are translated into practical applications, and you bring a proactive attitude to high-quality research. With a strong eagerness to learn, you stay curious about new methods and developments in the field, and you enjoy sharing knowledge within a multidisciplinary team.
In addition, you bring:
- A PhD with an excellent research track record in biostatistics, clinical epidemiology, data science or a related quantitative discipline.
- Experience with causal inference methods, demonstrated through peer-reviewed scientific publications.
- Programming experience, preferably in R or Python, and an affinity for working with large-scale datasets.
- Experience collaborating within multidisciplinary research teams.

More information
- As a Postdoctoral Researcher, your salary will range from €3,897 to €5,867 gross per month (salary scale 9 to 11, CAO UMC), depending on your knowledge and experience. These amounts are based on a full-time appointment. A 3.5% salary increase will take effect on 1 May 2027.
- The selection procedure consists of three stages: a review of your CV and motivation letter, an interview and a presentation of previously conducted research.
