PhD Candidate in Immunology

You have 23 more days to apply

Groundbreaking research into chronic inflammation and innovative antibody therapies is at the heart of this position. As a PhD candidate in immunology at Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), you will investigate the role of post-translational protein modifications in cardiometabolic and autoimmune diseases. You will develop novel bispecific antibodies and explore their therapeutic potential in a translational research environment. Close collaboration with researchers in Leiden and Maastricht offers a unique combination of fundamental and applied research.

About your role

This PhD project focuses on the role of post-translational protein modifications (PTMs) in systemic low-grade inflammation and the development of cardiometabolic and autoimmune diseases. You will combine laboratory research with translational applications by developing novel bispecific antibodies that locally inhibit complement activation. Working closely with researchers at Maastricht University, you will also contribute to scientific publications, international conferences and educational activities.

Your main responsibilities include:

  • Developing and performing assays to measure PTMs, anti-PTM antibodies and complement factors in human samples using ELISA, Luminex and/or mass spectrometry.
  • Designing bispecific antibodies and conducting in vitro and in vivo experiments to investigate their therapeutic potential.
  • Collaborating with the Maastricht University research team to integrate human research data with preclinical experimental findings.
  • Publishing scientific papers, presenting research findings at international conferences and contributing to educational activities within the department.

About your workplace

The Complement and Antibodies research group, led by Prof. Leendert Trouw, is part of the Department of Immunology at Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC). State-of-the-art research facilities support this project. In addition, you will collaborate with an extensive network of national and international researchers who provide scientific expertise, reagents and valuable feedback.

The project is carried out in close collaboration with the research group of Dr. M. van Greevenbroek at Maastricht University. A second PhD candidate based in Maastricht is investigating complementary aspects of the same project through epidemiological analyses of human studies. Regular joint meetings and exchange visits between both research locations are an integral part of the PhD programme.

About you

You have a strong interest in translational research within an interdisciplinary research environment. Working accurately and carefully comes naturally to you, and you combine analytical and critical thinking with clear communication. You are well organised, collaborate effectively with colleagues from different disciplines and can successfully combine multiple research activities. In addition, you are eager to learn, flexible and proactive when taking on new challenges.

In addition, you have:

  • A completed Master's degree in Biomedical Sciences, Medicine, Biology or a related field.
  • Strong laboratory skills and affinity with laboratory techniques such as ELISA.
  • Experience with immunological assays using human cells and sera.
  • Willingness and suitability to participate in in vivo research.
  • Excellent command of scientific English, both written and spoken.
  • Experience with SPSS and/or R, or the willingness to learn these programmes.
