Assistant or associate professor innovative approaches to complex bacterial infections

You have 15 more days to apply

Innovative infectious disease research gains additional depth within LUMC. As Assistant/Associate Professor you develop innovative treatment approaches for complex bacterial infections with direct clinical relevance. Translational research is a part of your work. Intensive collaboration within the Leiden University Center for Infectious Diseases (LUCID) creates a strong multidisciplinary research network.

About your role

In this position, you lead research on difficult-to-treat, recurrent and complex bacterial infections. Together with the research team, you generate essential biological and biomedical knowledge. You use advances in in vitro and in vivo models for this work. This knowledge is applied within translational research. The focus lies on developing prevention and treatment strategies for biofilms, recurrent urinary tract infections and other complex infection-related conditions. In addition, you collaborate with fundamental researchers and clinicians within LUCID. Together, you investigate the therapeutic potential of alternative treatment strategies, such as microbiome interventions, bacteriophages and novel antimicrobials.

Your main responsibilities are

  • Engage with researchers and clinicians within and outside LUCID to establish a translational research line on innovative alternatives for intervention in difficult-to-treat infections.
  • Develop and apply fundamental biological models (in vitro and/or in vivo) to support pre-clinical research into recurrent or chronic bacterial infections
  • Secure national and international competitive funding to build and sustain a research group
  • Participate in education programs of LUMC in your field of expertise.

About your workplace

Research and care in infectious diseases and microbiology are concentrated within LUCID at LUMC. LUCID combines clinical care, medical microbiology and a large research program. Research ranges from fundamental to translational science. Within the department, research groups collaborate closely across four focus areas. Microbial communities in health and disease forms one of these focus areas.

Working within LUCID means working in a highly collaborative research environment. Short communication lines and intensive collaboration are central. In addition, there is ample room for innovation and knowledge sharing.

About you

An entrepreneurial mindset goes hand in hand with strong scientific expertise. In addition, you enjoy working within multidisciplinary teams. You are able to translate clinically relevant questions into robust experimental hypotheses. Collaboration and connecting different disciplines come naturally to you. You are also motivated to integrate microbiome research into existing infection models.

Furthermore, you have:

  • A PhD in biomedical sciences, microbiology or a related field.
  • Several years of postdoctoral experience and a proven track record in independent research.
  • Strong knowledge of chronic bacterial infections, biofilms and novel antimicrobial modalities.
  • Experience in acquiring external funding and managing complex research programs.
  • Experience in working within multidisciplinary teams and translational research.
