Willem-Alexander Kinderziekenhuis

Pediatric Orthopedics

Pediatric orthopedics deals with abnormalities of the bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons of children (0 to 18 years). This includes, for example, congenital diseases, including hip dysplasia and clubfoot, growth abnormalities, bone fractures, infections (osteomyelitis, arthritis), or rare diseases, such as tumors.

The Department of Pediatric Orthopedics at the WAKZ is unique due to the extensive collaboration of internationally trained pediatric orthopedists with various other departments within the LUMC/WAKZ, as well as with other hospitals within and outside the region.

In addition, the Department of Pediatric Orthopedics conducts extensive scientific research, and the pediatric orthopedic surgeons are affiliated with various (inter)national organizations in the field of pediatric orthopedics.

What can we do for your child?

If your child has been referred to the Willem-Alexander Children's Hospital, we will discuss with the parents and the child what we will do to find an explanation for the symptoms (diagnosis). It is possible that examinations will take place, such as a physical examination, X-rays, ultrasound, or a CT or MRI scan.

Once the explanation for the symptoms has been found, we provide explanation and advice, and create a plan with the parents and the child to treat the condition.

Appointment and admission

Outpatient clinic appointment

An outpatient appointment with a pediatric orthopedic physician takes place at the orthopedics outpatient clinic or at the Stad ward within the WAKZ.

Sometimes an X-ray is taken beforehand, or the child is measured and weighed by the doctor's assistant, for example.

Admitted to the hospital

Scientific research

In 2020, our team was expanded partly to boost research in the field of pediatric orthopedics at the LUMC, as well as with collaborating centers in the Netherlands. In this, we focus particularly on:

  • pediatric oncology (in collaboration with Princess Maxima Center for Pediatric Oncology)
  • hip dysplasia (in collaboration with Erasmus MC-Sophia)
  • leg length and positional deviations
  • role of Artificial Intelligence in the diagnosis of pediatric orthopedic conditions
  • hip arthroplasty in children and (young) adults
  • Optimizing care surrounding treatments (limiting blood loss during surgeries, validating questionnaires for parents and children).

Our team

There are three pediatric orthopedists working at the LUMC, who also collaborate extensively with other centers within and outside the region.

  • Prof. Dr. MAJ Van de Sande (also working at the Princess Maxima Center for Pediatric Oncology)
  • Dr. PB De Witte
  • DRJ Kempink (also works at Erasmus MC-Sophia)

In addition, there is a special consultation hour in collaboration with the rehabilitation physician, physiotherapy, and neurology, for children and (young) adults with nerve injuries, including brachial plexus injury (damage to the nerves to the arm, sustained during birth or following an accident).

The orthopedic surgeons listed below specialize in this:

  • Dr. B. Németh
  • J. Nagels
