Healthcare is facing major challenges. An ageing population, increasing pressure on healthcare systems, growing health inequalities and a rise in chronic diseases all demand new solutions. As a university medical centre, LUMC plays a unique role in addressing these challenges. We conduct research to help prevent disease, improve diagnosis and develop more effective treatments.

Within Design & Prototyping, researchers, healthcare professionals, and engineers work together to develop solutions to real-world healthcare challenges. This includes devices that support safer childbirth and improve care for newborn babies. The team also develops innovative tools for robot-assisted surgery, neurological research, and transplant medicine. In this way, concepts developed through research are transformed into practical applications that directly contribute to better healthcare.
