General Pediatrics
We collaborate extensively with other pediatricians at the Willem-Alexander Children's Hospital, such as the pediatric cardiologists. We also work closely with specialists from the LUMC, such as neurologists, clinical geneticists (heredity specialists), and the child psychiatrist.
What we doe
The children who come to us have often first been treated by other pediatricians or other specialists.
Expert consultation
We offer a number of expert consultation hours for children with specific conditions. A child with a particular condition can then see multiple specialists during a single visit. Examples of conditions for which we have an expert consultation hour:
- eating disorders
- 22q11 deletion syndrome
- Coffin-Siris syndrome
- hearing disorders
- intellectual disability that is not yet understood
In our treatments, we often collaborate with other organizations. For example, Basalt Rehabilitation, 's Heeren Loo (Doctors for the Intellectually Disabled), and Curium (child psychiatry).
Treatment
Treatment plan
We assess which health problems the child has. We do this together with the parents. Then we decide whether further investigation is necessary. We create a plan for the child's treatment and discuss with the parents whether support is needed at home.
Specialized eating disorders team
Children with eating disorders are treated by a specialized team. This team consists of child psychiatrists, dieticians, and pediatricians. At the Willem-Alexander Children's Hospital, pediatricians work who specialize in the medical care of children with eating disorders. We do this at the outpatient clinic, but also when a child is admitted to Curium or the Willem-Alexander Children's Hospital.
Consultations and eating disorders
Children with an eating disorder can be referred to our outpatient clinic by a general practitioner or another doctor. In that case, they must also be referred to Curium (Academic Centre for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry).
Sometimes children with an eating disorder need to be admitted to the hospital. In rare cases, forced feeding may be necessary. We have an experienced team of nurses and doctors for this.
