Willem-Alexander Children's Hospital

Pediatric nephrology (children's kidney diseases)

At the Willem-Alexander Children's Hospital, we can treat children aged 0 to 18 with all types of kidney diseases. We work as one team with our fellow pediatric nephrologists at the Sophia Children's Hospital. Many examinations and treatments can take place at the Willem-Alexander Children's Hospital. If a child requires chronic dialysis, this is performed at the Sophia Children's Hospital in Rotterdam. Kidney transplants are also performed at the Sophia Children's Hospital in Rotterdam.

Sometimes, abnormalities of the kidneys, urinary tract, or bladder are already detected during an ultrasound in pregnancy. In that case, we create a treatment plan together with the obstetrics department before the birth.

What we do

Who do we treat?

We treat children with various kidney diseases and abnormalities of the urinary tract. For example:

  • congenital kidney abnormalities
  • hereditary kidney diseases
  • nephrotic syndrome
  • kidney failure
  • high blood pressure
  • disruption of the water and salt balance

The children with kidney diseases and urinary tract abnormalities whom we receive at the Willem-Alexander Children's Hospital have usually first been seen by another pediatrician. This may be a pediatrician at a general hospital, a fellow pediatrician from the WAKZ, or another university medical center. Sometimes, after consultation, we also see children who have been referred by their general practitioner or the Youth and Family Center.

Goal of the treatment

The goal of the treatment is for children to have as normal a life as possible. We want them to grow up well and develop. We achieve this with the help of medication or other support. We ensure that the parents and the rest of the family help with this.

In the Department of Pediatric Nephrology at the Willem-Alexander Children's Hospital, we collaborate with other doctors. For children with hereditary kidney diseases, we consult with the doctors of Clinical Genetics (heredity specialists). For unborn and newborn babies, we collaborate with perinatal obstetrics and neonatology. When children reach the age of 18, we transfer the patients to the nephrologists who care for adults. If surgery is required, we consult with the pediatric urologists (at the Sophia Children's Hospital).

At the Willem-Alexander Children's Hospital, we actively consider the needs of children who have a different illness but also develop kidney problems. For example, children in intensive care, children who have undergone heart surgery, or children who have received a stem cell transplant.

Checks

The check-ups with the pediatric nephrologist take place at the Stad ward of the Willem-Alexander Children's Hospital. During the check-up, an ultrasound of the kidneys and urinary tract is usually performed first. This is done in the Radiology Department.

At every check-up, the child is weighed and measured by the doctor's assistant. Blood pressure is almost always measured as well. Sometimes urine or blood also needs to be tested.

We have a special toilet that allows us to measure how urination works. Therefore, it is important to come to the consultation with a full bladder.

Scientific research

At the Willem-Alexander Children's Hospital, we also conduct scientific research. We do this in collaboration with other academic hospitals.

Currently, we are conducting research into congenital abnormalities of the kidneys and/or urinary tract. That is the ArtDECO study . We are also participating in research to better treat nephrotic syndrome. That is the LEARNS study .
