Pediatric cardiology and pediatric cardiac surgery

The Department of Pediatric Cardiology and Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at LUMC is part of the Network for Congenital Heart Defects. Within this network, Amsterdam UMC, LUMC (together CAHAL), UMC Groningen and UMC Utrecht work together to provide the best care for children and adults with a congenital heart defect. By joining forces instead of offering care at each individual medical center, patients receive the right care in the right place.

CAHAL has been in existence for over 25 years. We treat heart defects and cardiac arrhythmias from the fetal stage through adulthood. Within this so-called 'lifespan care', we pay close attention to the personal guidance of patients and parents.

Within CAHAL, we specialize in fetal interventions (interventions on the heart of unborn children), cardiac catheterization, complex pediatric cardiac surgery, and the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias.

Treatments

We treat children with congenital and acquired heart defects and children with cardiac arrhythmias.

CAHAL

In CAHAL, specialists and nurses work together to provide the best care for the heart. During the fetal and childhood stages, all interventions take place at the LUMC. The unique Cardiovascular Intervention Center (CVIC) offers a highly advanced environment for the treatment of heart defects. This includes the so-called hybrid operating rooms, where the pediatric cardiologist and pediatric cardiac surgeon can perform treatment on the heart simultaneously. *Video is in Dutch

Education and science

We consider education and science to be very important. We conduct a great deal of scientific research. The CAHAL is even one of the largest centers in the Netherlands for scientific research in the field of heart defects and cardiac arrhythmias. We train heart specialists from home and abroad and we organize several courses annually.
