Hemophilia Treatment Center LUMC-Haga Hospital
When a child is referred to the hemophilia treatment center, we discuss with the parents and the child (if old enough) what (blood) tests are necessary to arrive at a diagnosis or to rule one out. Once a diagnosis has been made, we agree on the treatment plan together. Treatment may consist of administering prophylactic medication or on-demand treatment when necessary, for example for surgeries, procedures, or in the event of bleeding.
Our treatments
At the LUMC-WAKZ-HagaZiekenhuis Hemophilia Treatment Center, children and adults with hemophilia, Von Willebrand disease, and other (hereditary) blood disorders are treated. Regular consultations take place between the various physicians and nurse specialists involved within the Hemophilia Treatment Center to coordinate treatment plans and discuss individual patients.
Once a diagnosis has been made or confirmed, a treatment plan is drawn up. This treatment plan is discussed and coordinated with the children and parents. If it is necessary to administer prophylactic medication, a blood sampling course is initiated at the outpatient clinic so that parents and children (if old enough) learn to administer the injections themselves. Therefore, a large part of the treatment can take place at home. Sometimes, it is necessary to be treated with medication in the hospital prior to a procedure or in the event of bleeding.
Appointment or admission
An outpatient appointment
An outpatient appointment with the pediatric hematologist or nurse practitioner takes place on the Stad ward. Day admissions can also take place here, and the pediatric nurse from the outpatient clinic can guide the child or parents in learning to give injections independently (for medication administration).
Admitted to the hospital

Admitted to the hospital
Sometimes children are admitted to the Bos or Strand ward of the Willem-Alexander Children's Hospital, for example in the case of bleeding or if medication needs to be administered for an operation.
Scientific research
The Hemophilia Treatment Center is involved in several scientific studies. The ultimate goal of scientific research is to improve the treatment of children and adults with a related clotting disorder. Our Hemophilia Treatment Center is actively involved in HemoNED, among others: the national registry for people with hemophilia and related conditions in the Netherlands.
