Patient care

Patient care is the core activity of the Department of Clinical Genetics. We see patients in the outpatient clinic with questions about heredity and perform genetic diagnostics in our laboratory.

For patients

A clinical geneticist or another clinical genetics healthcare professional will investigate whether a condition may be hereditary. We assess whether there is an increased risk for you or your children, and, if necessary, DNA diagnostics will be requested. The results of the investigation and the possible implications for you and your family will be discussed with you.

In certain situations, we also provide psychological support to help with personal decisions you may face. The outcome of genetic testing may also be relevant for your family members. In such cases, we will ask you to inform them, and we can support you in doing so if needed.

For applicants

The Genomic Diagnostics (GD) section is responsible for performing and interpreting diagnostics in the field of a wide range of conditions. GD is ISO15189 accredited by the Dutch Accreditation Council under number M007. The application forms and more information about our diagnostic activities can be found below.

All results are provided by registered Clinical Laboratory Geneticists. If you are in need of interpretation by a Clinical Geneticist as well, please indicate this in your request.

Education

The Department of Clinical Genetics contributes to educational activities of the LUMC in the field of genetic counseling and clinical genetic laboratory diagnostics. This includes teaching within the Medical and Biomedical Sciences curricula (organization of modules and longitudinal education, and offering internships), as well as postgraduate education for various medical specialties and general practitioners.

Research

Clinical Genetics underlines the research goal of this centre which is: “To elucidate the molecular and clinical etiology of hereditary disease, congenital malformation, multifactorial disorders and hereditary cancer, in order to improve diagnostics, assist counselling, develop treatments and further prevention.”

Laboratory accreditation history

Molecular Genetics has been accredited by the Dutch accreditation council RvA since 1998 on the basis of ISO 17025 (and including ISO 9001).

Cytogenetics received accreditation in 2000 from both the CCKL (Foundation for the promotion of quality in laboratory research and for the accreditation of healthcare laboratories) and the RvA. Both laboratories were the first to receive accreditation in their field. The CCKL accreditation was voluntarily terminated on January 1, 2008, because the CCKL, unlike the RvA, cannot provide an internationally recognized accreditation.

The Haemoglobinopathy Laboratory has been accredited by the RvA since 2006.
