Centralized Biobanking Facility

The LUMC centralized Biobank facility provides the infrastructure and support to collect, store and distribute biomaterials of donors (patients and controls) with associated (clinical) data for future (bio-)medical research studies.

The LUMC Biobank organisation provides advice regarding rules and regulations to researchers and clinicians.

LUMC Biobank regulations

The centralized LUMC Biobank organisation supports implementing Biobank regulations regarding informed consent procedure, collection (and processing) of human tissues intended for future scientific research, storage under controlled and standardized conditions, as well as distribution of biomaterials and associated data.

The LUMC biobank organisation stores and distributes human tissue only after approval of an independent LUMC Review Biobank Committee and the Medical Ethical Testing Committee Leiden The Hague Delft, which reviews whether the collection complies with the Biobank regulations.

Among others, these regulations state what the donor must be informed about, how their privacy is guaranteed and which permissions should be given by the donor, and for which specific purpose the samples are stored.

Biobanking within the LUMC

The LUMC Biobank organisation stores over half a million specimen of body material from 80 LUMC Biobank collections under standardized conditions.

Starting a new LUMC Biobank collection

Please contact our department if you want to start a biobank collection for a specific disease or if a biobank collection is part of your WMO-study.

Usage samples of an existing Biobank collection

External researchers may request human tissue that is stored by the LUMC Biobank organisation, but only through a collaboration with a researcher from the LUMC. Responsibility for the human tissue remains with the LUMC researcher, whereby donors’ privacy is guaranteed. Please contact the LUMC Biobankorganisation when you would like to use material: Biobankorganisatie@lumc.nl.
