Willem-Alexander Children's Hospital

Pediatric endocrinology

The Department of Pediatric Endocrinology specializes particularly in the following conditions (Expertise Centers):
- Rare growth disorders (Genetics and Growth)
- Rare bone disorders (Bone Quality Center)
- Endocrine tumors, particularly the pituitary gland
- Marfan syndrome
- Primary lipodystrophy
- Fibrous dysplasia
- McCune-Albright syndrome

For effective treatment, we collaborate closely with physicians and laboratories in clinical genetics, internal medicine, and neurosurgery, among others. At the LUMC, a child can also be treated for conditions such as thyroid disease while still in the womb. Additionally, we work with pediatricians in other hospitals to ensure that care is always provided in the right place.

What we do

In addition to the expertise mentioned above, we treat children with a wide range of hormonal disorders. Hormones are released into the bloodstream via endocrine glands and stimulate or inhibit the function of organs. Examples of endocrine glands are:

  • pituitary
  • thyroid
  • parathyroid glands
  • adrenal glands
  • genitals
  • pancreas

Treatment

Treatment and involved doctors

Children with a hormonal disorder are seen at our outpatient clinic by the pediatric endocrinologist from the Willem-Alexander Children's Hospital. For rare growth disorders, the specialized clinical geneticist (heredity doctor) also joins the consultation. Sometimes it is necessary to perform a hormone test in the day treatment unit. The children are supervised by the medical assistant, outpatient nurses, and, if necessary, by educational staff.

Ready Steady Go

For every treatment, we determine the most suitable option together with the parents and child. We prepare young people with a chronic hormonal disorder for independence starting from the age of 12-14. We do this according to the Ready Steady Go method .

Diagnoses and treatments

In the attachment that you can download below, we provide a brief explanation of normal and abnormal growth and of the main regulatory system of the various hormones.

An outpatient appointment at Pediatric Endocrinology

An outpatient appointment at the Willem-Alexander Children's Hospital starts with weighing and measuring, followed by the visit to the pediatric endocrinologist.

To determine what is wrong with a child, the pediatric endocrinologist begins each visit with an interview (anamnesis) and a physical examination. In addition, past growth records are an important source of information. Therefore, you are asked to send these records in advance. Sometimes additional blood or urine tests are necessary, or an X-ray of the hand, ultrasound, or scan may be requested.

A test or treatment at the day treatment center

The pediatric endocrinologist at the Willem-Alexander Children's Hospital will discuss the purpose of each test and the necessary measures with you. Medication is also administered via an intravenous drip during the day treatment unit.

Scientific research

In the Department of Pediatric Endocrinology at the Willem-Alexander Children's Hospital, we conduct scientific research into:

  • Complex growth disorders
  • Hormone disorders after a stem cell transplant
  • Rare disorders of bone formation and breakdown
