PhD

MSc. A. Louis

Introduction
In 2019 I finished my Master study Biomedical Sciences at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. During my masters I performed two research-internships; one at the Tytgat Institute for Liver and Intestinal Research and the other at the Dermatology department/Lab Experimental Dermatology, both located at the AUMC, Amsterdam. These internships were immunologically-oriented and focused on autoimmunity of the intestine and skin, respectively. From 2020 till 2022 I worked at the department of Immunology at the LUMC, Leiden as a research technician. There the project aimed to use the monocyte-macrophage system as a tool for early diagnostics in cancer. Currently I work as a PhD student at the LUMC, Leiden within the Dermatology department on the interaction of the skin microbiome and lipidic barrier in young and aged skin models.
Scientific research
The main focus of the PhD project is to research the interaction between the skin microbiome and lipidic barrier, and to evaluate the effect of age, barrier quality and environmental challenges on these interactions. In order to do so, we use human skin equivalents mimicking young and aged skin and employ several techniques including IHC, qPCR, LCMS and TEWL measurements.
