Clinical genetics
Introduction
At the LUMC I am coordinator of the NFU Expert Center for Hereditary Tumor Syndromes and of the subcenters for Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer and Hereditary Breast Cancer. Recognizing families with a hereditary predisposition to cancer is important with regard to the possibility of prevention.
I am trained as a clinical geneticist and contribute to scientific research to improve oncogenetic care. I work closely together with a large multidisciplinary clinical and research team at the LUMC.
I also fulfill various advisory functions for quality aspects within Clinical Genetics, such as the Clinical Genetic and Counseling Specialist Advisory Group (SAG) and I am chair of the ESHG-Eurogentest Quality Sub-Committee.
I am also a member of the scientific integrity committee, a joint committee of Leiden University and LUMC.
Scientific research
My scientific research focuses on hereditary and familial tumors, in particular breast and ovarian cancer. The aim is to improve clinical genetic consultation. Attention is paid to: improving risk assessment; both by modelling and by means of improvement of molecular techniques, psychological aspects, risk communication, guideline development, improvement of screening methods, implementation of knowledge in the field of oncogenetics in general medicine and medical specialties working in the field of oncology.
