About your role

As a PhD candidate in the MReye Research Group within the Departments of Ophthalmology, Radiology and Radiotherapy, you will conduct research within the larger COMPOSE project. Within this project we develop methods to combine optical, MRI and histopathology data of eye cancer patients and use this to further personalize the treatment. Your contribution to this larger project will be constructing a method to relate new quantitative MRI measurements to known histopathology makers, with the aim of using these MR-biomarkers to tailor the treatment of all patients, also those who do not get an invasive biopsy. You will subsequently explore strategies to integrate these biomarkers into current treatment planning and follow-up. Additionally, you will assist in the clinical studies that provide the data for your analyses.

About you

  • A completed Master's degree in (medical) Physics, Medicine, Clinical Technology, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Affinity for developing new technologies and evaluating them in a relevant context.
  • Experience with programming in a language such as Python is required.
  • Experience with medical imaging is advantageous.
  • Fluent command of the English language is required, preferably supplemented with knowledge of the Dutch language.
  • Independence and enthusiasm for executing collaborative projects.
  • Precision and organizational skills combined with a flexible attitude.
  • Excellent communication skills and attention to detail.

About your workplace

You will work within the C.J. Gorter MRI Center, an enthusiastic research group who develops and applies new MRI technologies. This group comprises five principal investigators and over 30 PhD students and postdocs, from both technical and clinical backgrounds. Within the Gorter Center, the MReye group focusses on ocular applications. You will additionally be affiliated to the Leiden Ocular Tumour Center, the national reference center for patients with eye cancer. This joint affiliation allows us to have close connections with our clinical colleagues, enabling a swift transition from bench to bedside.

More information

  • Depending on your background, you will be classified as PhD candidate or physician-researcher. As PhD candidate this means a salary of €3.071 in the first year and €3,824 in the final year (scale Pro, CLA UMC). As a physician-researcher your salary will at minimum be €3,493 and €5,504 at most (scale 10, CLA UMC). These figures are based on full-time employment.
