Symposium "Road to Success"

YFN’s second annual symposium, “The road to Success”, took place on February 6, 2014 in Building 1 of the Leiden University Medical Center.

Approximately 35 participants preregistered for the symposium, mostly from within the LUMC. The event was also advertised more broadly in the Medical Delta and the Leiden Bioscience Park.

The first part of the event consisted of two workshops that were given twice in parallel, allowing everyone to attend both. In one workshop, Jelle Mostert (‘Jij bent een superheld’) introduced the attendants to some basic concepts for speedreading. With a few simple steps, most participants were able to increase their reading speed significantly, potentially saving time and increasing productivity. The other workshop was conducted by Alex den Haan (‘Alex den Haan – Online Media Guy’) who demonstrated how social media can positively contribute to communicating your science to a wide audience.

After the workshops, the objectives of the YFN were presented, and some of the initiatives employed by the YFN board were over the past year were highlighted. Specifically, ongoing efforts to gain insight in size of YFN’s target audience within the LUMC, as well as involvement in policy making at multiple levels within the LUMC were discussed.

Third, there was a keynote lecture by prof. dr. Piet Borst, honorary doctor of Leiden University and professor at the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI). In a very entertaining lecture, prof. Borst provided insight in topics related to mentoring, quality of science, and the increasing importance given to societal impact.
