The Graduate School of Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) offers medical and biomedical PhD students a highly reputed research environment, excellent infrastructure and supervision, and in-depth scientific and transferable skill courses jointly developed by Leiden University and LUMC. The Graduate School Office facilitates PhD admission and registration for PhD students by means of the research management system Converis.
A PhD degree is an advanced research degree (Doctorate) awarded by Leiden University on the basis of a thesis and an oral examination. Your thesis must be a significant and substantial piece of research. You will conduct your research in one of the following Medical Research Profiles of LUMC:
- Vascular & Regenerative Medicine
- Immunity, Infections and Tolerance
- Translational Neurosciences
- Cancer Pathogenesis and Therapy
- Innovation in Health Strategy Quality of Care
- Biomedical Imaging
A PhD degree normally takes four years of research and thesis preparation. You will be required to officially defend your thesis before a committee consisting of (co)thesis advisor, thesis commitee, and other experts in the field.

Eurolife Summer School 2017: Antimicrobial drug resistance – grants for participants
Eurolife provides 27 grants to attend the Eurolife Summer School “Antimicrobial drug resistance – Research and Innovation”. The Summer School will be held in Barcelona from 10th to 14th July 2017. Interested PhD and MSc students are encouraged to apply by 31st of March.

Submissions must include the application form, a Curriculum Vitae of the applicant, a motivation letter and a brief description of their PhD or MSc research project. All documents must be sent in pdf format to the local Eurolife Administrator (email@example.com ). The deadline for submission of the application for the grants is 31st March 2017.

"Citizen science - science and public participation in the digital age"
The summer school is for intermediate to advanced doctoral candidates from LERU universities. Participants should be interested in developments in science in general and in science with and for society questions in particular, and be willing to actively work on a project which deals with new ways to interact with non-academic citizens. Leiden University may nominate two PhD students for participation. If you are interested to participate, please contact the Graduate School Office.
How to enroll as a PhD student at LUMC
Qualifications: you must have a University Master's degree (MD or MSc) or equivalent. To enroll you must first find funding and a thesis advisor or secure a vacant PhD position in one of the above research profiles.
