Clinical Geneticist, Teacher
Dr. Y. Hilhorst-Hofstee
Introduction
I have been working at the LUMC since 1993. First as a resident in training to become a clinical geneticist and later as a clinical geneticist. I have a special interest in connective tissue disorders, particularly Marfan syndrome and related hereditary aortic problems. I am the coordinator of the multidisciplinary expertise center in this field. In 2013, I received my PhD for my research on the clinical and genetic aspects of various aortic syndromes.
I also have a special interest in the hereditary causes of intellectual disability, particularly in children. For this purpose, I see children in the outpatient clinic both at the LUMC and at the Reinier de Graaf Gasthuis Hospital in Delft.
The rapid developments in DNA diagnostics mean that I learn new things every day.
Besides my work as a clinical geneticist, I really enjoy teaching and innovating education. I primarily teach undergraduate medical students. In recent years, I have been a mentor for a group of first-year medical students, which is also extremely rewarding.
