Introduction
Since 1998, I have been working on hereditary cerebral vascular diseases, particularly those affecting the small cerebral vessels. These diseases cause strokes and dementia in patients, typically starting in middle age. In 2003, I received my PhD for my thesis on the hereditary cerebral vascular disease CADASIL, and in 2008, I completed my medical specialist training in clinical genetics. As head of the LUMC expertise center for hereditary cerebral vascular diseases, I am involved in both patient care and scientific research and education. In recent years, researchers in my research group and I have been awarded several grants, for example from ZonMw and the Brain Foundation, for research into hereditary cerebral vascular diseases such as CADASIL.
