At LUMC, you step into a role where cutting-edge research in transplant immunogenetics meets real-world clinical impact. As an assistant professor, you’ll shape your own scientific direction within a highly collaborative and experienced team. The position offers space for initiative, intellectual freedom, and academic growth. You’ll work on projects that bridge fundamental science and patient care. A setting where your expertise drives both innovation and your personal academic trajectory.

About your role

As a scientific researcher at the Laboratory of Transplant Immunology of the Department of Immunology, you will work on fundamental and translational research focused on the immunogenetics of transplantation. You will have access to a research team that focuses on improved matching and risk stratification for the benefit of the various transplant patients. The research focuses on the differential immunogenicity of HLA and the different aspects of alloimmunity and alloreactive cells.

Your tasks include:

  • Conducting research in the field of immunogenetics and immunology for solid organ and stem cell transplantation.
  • Supervising a team of experienced research technicians who support you in the execution of the research.
  • Co-supervising PhD student(s) during their PhD trajectory.
  • Writing research proposals to acquire funds to carry out and further develop the research described.

In this position, you will be given the opportunity to show your own initiative and to develop yourself into an independent researcher.

About your workplace

Heidt, and the Associate Professor of Transplant Immunology, Dr. D. Roelen, who is also the head of the diagnostic HLA laboratory of the Department of Immunology.

The Department of Immunology combines fundamental research, translational research and diagnostics in the field of immunology. Our research focuses on improving the diagnosis and treatment of immune-mediated diseases, such as transplant rejection, immune deficiencies, autoimmunity and cancer. The department is also directly involved in patient care in the form of HLA diagnostics for organ and stem cell transplants. In addition to research and patient care, the Department of Immunology is active in education, valorisation and support for clinical research.

About you

You are interested in both fundamental and translational research. You work accurately and in a structured way and feel at home in a team environment. You are independent, empathetic, communicative, flexible and able to think outside the box. In addition, you have:

  • An MSc in Biomedical Sciences, Biology or another life sciences degree.
  • A PhD on an immunological subject and a demonstrable affinity with transplantation and/or immunogenetics.
  • Extensive knowledge of the HLA system and knowledge of and experience with various molecular and cellular laboratory techniques such as qPCR, sequencing, transfection and transductions, cell culture, (multidimensional) flow cytometry, and serological techniques.
  • Experience with complex data analysis using R studio and/or Python, experience in supervising PhD students and experience in writing project proposals and a proven track record in obtaining project funds.
