Although largely unknown outside the scientific community, the ApoE*3-Leiden.CETP mouse is as familiar to many cardiovascular researchers as Mickey Mouse is to the general public. Developed by LUMC and TNO, this mouse model has been used worldwide for decades to investigate the mechanisms underlying atherosclerosis and to evaluate novel therapeutic strategies. Remarkably, the story behind this globally adopted mouse model did not start in the laboratory, but with a special patient.
