Researchers flourish in a culture that is characterized by independence and integrity. All employees, including PhD candidates of Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), as well as students of LUMC and others who are conducting research with the LUMC or using LUMC facilities, are expected to conduct research according to the highest ethical and professional scientific standards.
Shared values are accuracy in planning and conducting research, objectivity and honesty in reporting research results, openness in sharing research materials, fairness in reviewing grant proposals, respect for patients, volunteers and animals being subject of scientific research and respect for colleagues. There is no single source for scientific standards. They are defined by government regulations, institute policies, professional codes of ethics, and commonly accepted practices.
For promoting and maintaining an integer research environment the LUMC is working on a research environment in accordance with the Nederlandse Gedragscode Wetenschappelijke Integriteit / Netherlands Code of Conduct for Research Integrity (published 1 October 2018). This Code respects the scope of international framework documents such as the Singapore Statement on Research Integrity (2010), the OECD’s Best Practices for Ensuring Scientific Integrity and Preventing Misconduct (2007) and ALLEA’s recently revised European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity (2017). On certain points, the code presented here offers more specifics and details than the ALLEA code.
In compliance with the prevailing Dutch Code the LUMC will work on the topics of duties of care to further promote and safeguard Good Research Practices & Scientific Integrity. For scope and transitional provisions see Chapter 1 of the Code.
Important information for all LUMC employees involved in scientific research and education are worded in a LUMC guide to integer scientific conduct. Where application of the LUMC Research Code unexpectedly conflicts with the Dutch Code, the Netherlands Code of Conduct for Research Integrity prevails:
- Scientific Integrity, LUMC Research Code (Dutch version, English version will follow soon)
- Reading guide to Scientific Integrity (Dutch version, English version will follow soon)
At the same time, not every ethical dilemma or responsible action will be addressed by existing standards. A key aspect of Good Research Practice & Integrity is the application of good judgment and personal integrity.
