Before your operation
Before your operation, you will first have a consultation with the doctor. They will explain how the operation will proceed. You will then have a consultation with the pharmacy assistant and the anesthesiologist. The pharmacy assistant will go through your medications with you. The anesthesiologist will discuss with you what type of anesthesia is best for you. For example, a spinal block, local anesthesia of an arm or leg, or general anesthesia.
On the day of your surgery, you will first be prepared in the ward. When you go to the surgery center, our staff will welcome you in the so-called Holding area. Here, you will be further prepared for the surgery. After this, an anesthetist will take you to the operating room.
During your surgery
In the operating room, you will be given an IV if you do not already have one. You will also be connected to monitoring equipment. We will measure your blood pressure and the amount of oxygen in your blood and monitor your heart rhythm. Before you are given the anesthetic or general anesthesia, the surgical team will go through a number of questions with you.
After your surgery
You will be well cared for after your surgery. Usually, you will be taken to the recovery room (also known as the “post-anesthesia care unit”). You will remain there until you are fully awake. If you are undergoing major surgery or have a heart or lung condition, you will be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) or the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) after your surgery. Sometimes you can go home quickly, and sometimes you will need to stay at the LUMC for a few nights.
