Central Blood Collection
Your treating physician has requested laboratory tests. This may mean that you need to have blood drawn or submit urine, stool, or sputum samples. You can do this at the Central Blood Collection. You may also have been referred for a so-called function test or AUC (medication curve). These tests are scheduled by your doctor and carried out by appointment at the Central Blood Collection Center.

Changing stoma bags (MIVA toilets)
At the LUMC, you can change or clean your stoma equipment in special rooms (MIVA toilets). There is a hygiene container where you can dispose of your waste. There is also a separate shelf next to the sink for all necessary items. You will find these rooms in the central hall of the LUMC and next to the restaurant on the 2nd floor.

Childcare
If you have an appointment at the LUMC or are visiting someone, you can bring your child(ren) to the free childcare facility.
Our volunteer enjoys having your child(ren) come and play. We have plenty of toys and craft materials to keep your child(ren) entertained.
You can only bring your child(ren) to the childcare facility by appointment.
The childcare is for children aged 0 to 10 years, for a maximum of 3 hours, and there is one volunteer present in the childcare facility. You will find the childcare facility on the 2nd floor of the LUMC, above the main entrance, next to the Patient Service Office.
How does it work?
- Children must be registered at least 3 working days in advance using the registration form https://forms.lumc.nl/lumc2/kinderopvang.
- After your registration, we will contact our regular volunteers and let you know as soon as possible whether or not we can arrange childcare.
- The registration for childcare is only final once you have received a confirmation email from us.

Coffee corner
The coffee corner serves coffee/tea, pastries, sandwiches, and soup.
Opening hours: Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
New rules for the use of disposable cups
From January 1, 2024, disposable cups will no longer be available. If you want to consume something at the coffee corner, you will be provided with crockery and glassware. Would you like to take something to eat or drink with you? Then the ‘bring your own’ principle applies: bring your own cup.
Did you forget to bring a cup? Reusable cups will be available for purchase at a number of locations in the LUMC, including the coffee corner and restaurants.
Facilities for children
There are various facilities for children in the hospital. View all facilities at the Willem-Alexander Children's Hospital of the LUMC.
Holiday dialysis
Are you a dialysis patient who enjoys going on vacation? Then we warmly welcome you to the LUMC dialysis center in Katwijk. The center is located near the sea and has a beautiful courtyard garden and a homely atmosphere. You can visit the dialysis center all year round. Your travel companions are also welcome to visit during your dialysis treatment.

Hostess/host
Are you unable to find your way around the LUMC? Hostesses and hosts will welcome you in the central hall of the LUMC (main building, hospital) or in one of our lounges. They will welcome you and gladly show you the way.
Internet (Wi-Fi)
There is free Wi-Fi in the main building of the LUMC. Log in to the ‘LUMC-gast’ network with your smartphone, tablet, or laptop. Don't have a smartphone, tablet, or laptop with you? There are computers you can use to access the internet on the Leidse Plein (2nd floor) opposite the coffee corner.
Interpreters
At the LUMC, you can make use of interpreters for various languages. Interpreters can be deployed ‘live’ and ‘by telephone’. Important: please clearly state the language, country of origin, and any dialect.
Would you like to make use of an interpreter? Discuss this with the staff of the department where you are being treated. They will then contact the Patient Service Office.
Lockers
Lockers are available at the LUMC (for a maximum of 24 hours). These are free of charge for patients. The lockers are located on the left side of the information desk in the central hall. You lock the locker with a personal 4-digit code. The instructions for use can be found on the locker. Are you a patient in a nursing ward? Then you can use bedside lockers with a combination lock.
Lounge
The lounge is a relaxation area for patients and visitors. The room is furnished with a reading table, a television, and a number of comfortable chairs and sofas. The lounge is located on the 2nd floor of the LUMC. Above the main entrance and next to the Patient Service Desk and childcare facility. You can reach the 2nd floor via the escalator in the central hall.

Meals
During your stay, you will receive three meals a day. Our service staff will also bring you drinks. The menu is available in your room. You can inform the service staff who prepare your meals of any dietary requirements, religious beliefs, or special requests.
- Breakfast: around 8:00 a.m.
You can put together your own breakfast from the extensive bread menu. We will visit you with a bread buffet trolley, take your order, and bring you your meal. You can order hot and cold drinks to accompany your meal.
- Drinks: around 10:00 a.m. We will visit you with hot and cold drinks.
- Lunch: around 12:00 p.m. We will also bring your lunch with the bread buffet trolley. You can order hot and cold drinks with your lunch.
- Drinks: around 2:00 p.m. We will come by with hot and cold drinks.
- Dinner: between 5:00 and 5:30 p.m.
Your order for dinner will be taken in the morning. You can choose from a chef's menu every day. If you do not like this menu, you can put together your own meal. You can indicate the portion size to the LUMC service employee.
- Drinks: around 7:00 p.m. We will visit you with hot and cold drinks.
As a patient, you can order a hot meal for your visitors for €7.50 in the nursing ward (with the exception of the Neurology ward). The meals are served at the same time as your meal.
Overnight stays for patients and family members
Do you have an early appointment at the LUMC, or has a family member been admitted and you want to be nearby? There are various options for overnight stays in the vicinity of the LUMC.

Palliative care
Palliative care is all care for terminally ill patients and their loved ones. At the LUMC, you can contact the Palliative Care Consultation Team. The goal of palliative care is to enable you to live as long as possible with a good quality of life. Alleviating or reducing symptoms is an important part of this. Parking
Are you visiting the LUMC by car? You can park in the parking garage or other parking areas (paid parking). It can be busy here, so make sure you arrive well in advance.
There are also disabled parking spaces, charging stations for electric cars, and a bicycle parking facility.
Are you coming to the LUMC for an emergency? Then you can use the emergency parking space at the Emergency Department (SEH). You can only park here for a short time.
Patient assistance
Do you have an appointment at an outpatient clinic or are you visiting someone at the LUMC? If so, you can make use of a patient assistant who will take you to your destination. This service is available Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
You can request a patient escort on site at the information desk in the central hall of the LUMC. Patient escorts cannot be reserved in advance.

Pharmacy
The LUMC Pharmacy supplies various medicines tailored to the specialist treatments provided by the LUMC. We deliver to your bed upon discharge, to the pharmacy counter, or via our 24/7 pick-up locker.

Plaster room
You can visit the plaster room if you have a broken arm or leg, but also for other fractures and abnormalities, conditions, diseases, or injuries to the musculoskeletal system. This includes, for example, bones, muscles, tendons, and joints. You can receive a (plastic) cast or braces or bandages for support. Or other aids that support or replace body parts (orthoses and prostheses). Read more about the Plaster Room.

Quiet room and prayer room
There is a quiet room and an Islamic prayer room at the LUMC. Here you can seek silence, sit quietly, pray, or meditate. You can also write down your thoughts or light a candle in the quiet room. The quiet room and prayer room are located on the 2nd floor of the LUMC next to the escalators, above the main entrance. The quiet room and prayer room are open day and night.
Radiological examination
Are you coming to the LUMC for a radiological examination? Then you can visit the Radiology outpatient clinic. A general practitioner or specialist often requests radiological examination in order to make a diagnosis. Radiological examination allows us to view the inside of your body. This can be done using an X-ray, ultrasound, or MRI scan, for example. This enables us to determine the location and nature of the injury, disease, or condition in your body.

Radiological examinations are performed in various ways, namely:
- X-rays: such as X-ray images or CT scans (an X-ray machine that takes a series of images);
- sound waves: ultrasound;
- magnetic fields and radio waves: via an MRI scan.
Rest room in the hospital
As a patient or visitor to the LUMC, you may want to rest during the day. For example, between two treatments, as a family member, or as parents of a newborn baby. You can then use the rest room on the 5th floor of the LUMC. This is available Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The rest room has a bed, kitchenette, reading table, and a number of comfortable chairs.

If you would like to use the rest room, please let a member of staff in your department know. They will then contact the Patient Service Office. You can also contact the Patient Service Office directly. It is not possible to reserve a rest room in advance.

Restaurant
Would you like to eat or drink something at the LUMC? Take the escalator up in the central hall. This will take you to Leidse Plein, where you will find the restaurant, coffee corner, and terrace. The restaurant offers an extensive range of food and drinks. There are organic sandwiches, soups that vary daily, a salad bar and a poke bowl bar, various organic dairy products and healthy snacks. You can visit the restaurant twice a day for a hot, freshly prepared meal. In the restaurant and at the coffee corner, you can only pay with a debit card or contactless.

Eating in the nurse ward
Is a family member or acquaintance of yours admitted to the LUMC? As a visitor, you can eat in the nursing ward for €7.50. You can purchase a voucher for this in the ward itself. Please indicate at least one day in advance if you wish to eat in the ward.

Smoking
The entire LUMC campus is smoke-free. This means that smoking is not permitted inside the buildings or on the grounds. This also applies to the use of e-cigarettes.
Social work
Have you been referred to Social Work or do you need help? For example, with coping with your illness, questions about recent loss or grief, or questions about work, integration, and finances during your illness? Then you can contact Social Work at the LUMC. There is an adult care team and a parent counseling team.

Spiritual care
Surgery or treatment in hospital can be very emotional. Spiritual counselors at LUMC are there to listen to you. They give you and your loved ones space to discuss what is on your mind during your stay. Spiritual care is available to all LUMC patients and their companions, such as family members or informal caregivers. Consultations can take place either in the hospital or at home.

Valuables
The LUMC takes various measures to protect your belongings. For example, the LUMC has a 24/7 security service and camera surveillance in and around the LUMC buildings. However, items are sometimes stolen. Therefore, leave valuable items such as jewelry, money, and equipment at home as much as possible. Store items you bring with you carefully or keep them in sight. Also, be mindful of valuable items you leave in your car.
Lost something?
If you have lost something or suspect theft, please go to the LUMC Security Department in the central hall (on the left side of the main entrance). They manage found and lost items. In case of theft, you can file a report with the help of security.
Vending machines
Are you looking for a parking payment machine or public transport ticket machine? You will find these in the central hall of Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC). You will also find parking payment machines at the entrance to the parking garage. Candy and soft drink vending machines are located in the central hall, the restaurant, the entrance to the parking garage, and near the lecture halls. There is an ATM in the station hall of Leiden Central Station. The station is within walking distance of the LUMC.
Volunteers
The LUMC wants patients and visitors to feel welcome and at home. Volunteers play an important role in this. Volunteers are active in various projects at the LUMC. The help of volunteers is indispensable for our patients. They offer support, guidance, and extra service to patients and their families. In doing so, they help make the stay at the LUMC more pleasant.
Wheelchairs
Wheelchairs are available for use at the LUMC. They are located on the ground floor of the parking garage and in the central hall. You can borrow a wheelchair with a 2 euro coin, which will be returned to you when you return the wheelchair.
