Area(s) of expertise:
Neurology
Introduction
I have been working as a resident in the Neurology department since 2020 and expect to complete my training as a neurologist by the end of 2026, with special attention to neuroimmunology and sleep-wake disorders. In this context, I am, among other things, a board member of the Sleep-Wake Disorders working group of the Dutch Society for Neurology.

Prior to my current role, I was first a medical and biomedical sciences student (both Master's degrees completed cum laude) and later worked as a PhD candidate in the research group of Prof. Dr. Lammers, which resulted in my PhD thesis that was completed on November 11, 2021, on the development of narcolepsy, titled "The autoimmune hypothesis of narcolepsy and its unexplored clinical features."
Scientific research
Since 2016, I have been involved in research on sleep-wake disorders, first as a PhD candidate and now as a postdoctoral researcher, particularly focusing on hypersomnolence disorders, such as narcolepsy. Within this field of research, I am mainly focused on unraveling the autoimmune process that leads to the development of narcolepsy type 1. I also investigate why people with narcolepsy often gain significant weight when they develop the disease.
Another focus of my research is sleep in the intensive care unit: why do people sleep so poorly there, and, equally important, how can we improve sleep?

For the above research, I have received several personal awards (including from the European Narcolepsy Network, the European Academy of Neurology, and at the 7th International Narcolepsy Symposium) and have been awarded grants for further research (including from Leiden University and the Dutch Society for Intensive Care Medicine).
