Introduction
Trained as a medical specialist in Medical Microbiology, after earlier doctoral research in biochemistry and hematology, I am a professor of Medical Microbiology, in particular Clinical Virology, since 2003. From 2007 up to and including 2022 I have led the Department of Medical Microbiology in the LUMC, furthermore I was supervisor for the specialty training and held many positions in various boards in the field and in the training of specialists. Within the LUMC organization, the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory (KML) has been directed by me for more than 20 years, during which time it has developed into a strictly quality-controlled, accredited and efficiently automated facility. On behalf of the educational tasks of LUMC, I was a member of the Education Board and the Education Committee for Medicine, currently a member of the BKO Review Committee.
Scientific research
My scientific work focuses on the origins, detection and treatment of virus-induced diseases in humans. This includes work on human herpesviruses (CMV, EBV), adenovirus, parvovirus, hepatitis viruses and respiratory tract infections, including influenza. Up till now, I have authored about 200 scientific publications and supervised about 30 PhD studies. This research falls within the LUMC Innovation Theme "Infection". As a special publication I am involved as editor-in-chief in the "Textbook of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases" (in Dutch), which is used by almost all Dutch and Flemish medical schools and of which I have taken care of three editions, the last one in 2023. During the time of the corona pandemic 2020-2022, I gave about 150 interviews to national media, mainly written press and radio programs.
