Scientific research
During my training (1977–1982) as a chest physician, I began clinical-scientific research into new therapies for lung cancer, culminating in my PhD thesis New Approaches in Small Cell Lung Cancer (1985). At the University Hospital Groningen, I initiated programs for lung cancer and lung transplantation. In 1992, I became department chair in Amsterdam and delivered my inaugural lecture in 1995: “…dat lossen we samen wel op.” My clinical research focused on lung cancer, endoscopy, pneumothorax, and pulmonary circulation, contributing to various PhD theses. After retirement, I joined the University of Liverpool to help improve lung cancer care and research. After 2.5 years, I returned to the Netherlands to head Pulmonary Diseases at LUMC. My vision was outlined in my lecture Grensverleggend maatwerk. After four years, I continued as a senior clinician and research mentor.
