Area(s) of expertise:
Otorhinolaryngology
Introduction
I work in the LUMC since 2020 as professor otorhinolaryngology with a special appointment on behalf of the Heinsius-Houbolt Foundation. My focus is on dizziness and the vestibular system with an emphasis on Meniere’s disease. I also work in Gelre Hospital Apeldoorn, where I was one of the co-founders (in 2000) of the Apeldoorn Dizziness Centre. I am an active teacher in vestibular topics and a regular invited speaker at courses and scientific meetings. I was chairman of the Dutch multidisciplinary guideline committee “BPPV”, “Dizziness in the elderly” and “Meniere’s Disease”. Currently I am chairman of the Dutch-Flemish Vestibular Society.
Scientific research
I lead an active group of research focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of Meniere’s disease, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and vestibular function loss.

In 2014 I was awarded the BSO/Clinical Otolaryngology prize for the best Otology paper published in Clinical Otolaryngology in 2014.
In 2022 I was assigned a grant from ZonMW for a multicentre study into the effect of intratympanic injections with corticosteroid versus placebo in the treatment of vertigo attacks in Meniere’s disease (PREDMEN trial).
