Area(s) of expertise:
General, Gastrointestinal and Transplant Surgeon
Introduction
I am a surgeon specialized in transplantation, gastrointestinal, and general surgery. Since 2019, I have held the position of Professor of Surgical Education in Abdominal Organ Procurement, Preservation, and Transplantation at Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC). I also serve as Director of the postgraduate training program in transplant surgery. My career began in Poland, where I graduated as a medical doctor and earned a PhD in liver transplantation. This was followed by international awards and fellowships in Belgium, focusing on liver regeneration. As a Fellow of the European Board of Surgery, I am actively involved in kidney, pancreas, and liver transplantation. I teach medical students and surgical trainees in Leiden and Warsaw, and I organize international workshops and courses. I also serve as acting head of department. My work revolves around surgery, education, and sharing knowledge.
Scientific research
My scientific research focuses on surgical techniques in abdominal organ procurement and transplantation. I have published several books and chapters on these topics, including Kidney Transplantation, Step-by-Step Surgical Techniques and contributions to Dutch surgical textbooks. My work has been translated into four languages and distributed worldwide. In collaboration with international universities, I also developed multimedia and e-learning modules. Through this research, I aim to improve surgical procedures and foster collaboration within transplant teams.
Education and training are central to my professional mission. At LUMC, I led the Eurodonor Surgery project, training ten Turkish surgeons in abdominal organ procurement in Leiden and Oxford. I developed e-learning modules, including the first globally on this technique, and authored textbooks translated into multiple languages. I also organized international courses and workshops with European and Turkish partners. My goal is to make surgical knowledge widely accessible and contribute to the global standardization of transplant techniques.
