Area(s) of expertise:
Molecular biology , Cell biology , Biochemistry
Introduction
I have received multiple prizes and honourable appointments, including: Long-term EMBO Fellowship (1992-1993), Small Fernström Prize for promising scientist in Sweden (1998), VICI personal grant from NWO-MW (2006), LUMC education prize for best biomedical sciences course (2010), Chang Jiang Scholar Award from the Chinese Ministry of Education. FEBS national lecture prize (2015), Noreen Cunningham lecture prize (2015), member of EMBO member (2016), Member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and Member of the European Academy (2021).

My ongoing research is focused on unraveling the mechanisms by which TGF-β family members elicit their multifunctional cellular effects and how perturbation in their signal transduction pathways contribute to human diseases and how we can redirect with synthetic molecules signaling responses in a cell type specific manner for therapeutic gain. I am a consultant and a member of the scientific advisory board of multiple biotechology companies.
