Lecturer Communication in Science

You have 5 more days to apply

Play a key role in shaping how future scientists communicate their ideas. As a lecturer in academic communication at LUMC, you work closely with students in small groups, offering personal guidance and meaningful feedback. You combine teaching, coaching, and curriculum development in an international academic environment. Your work directly strengthens the quality and impact of the next generation of biomedical professionals.

About your role

You guide bachelor’s and master’s students in developing their academic writing and presentation skills. Teaching takes place in both English and Dutch, often in small groups, which allows for personal attention and targeted feedback. You will be part of a committed team where knowledge and didactic expertise are actively shared, with room to contribute your own ideas.

Your main responsibilities are:

  • Guiding students in writing academic texts that meet the standards of scientific publications.
  • Training students to deliver clear, confident, and engaging presentations.
  • Coaching students in small groups as well as in one-on-one sessions.
  • Collaborating with colleagues to develop and innovate teaching materials and educational approaches.

About your workplace

You will be working at the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), an academic hospital where patient care, research, and education are closely integrated. Within LUMC, there is a strong focus on continuously improving the quality of education, with the aim of preparing students for careers in science and healthcare.

You will be part of the Communication in Science (CIS) team, which trains biomedical bachelor’s and master’s students to become strong academic communicators in their field. The program is part of the Education Expertise Center and collaborates closely with all academic programs within the Faculty of Medicine. The work environment is international and intellectually driven, with a strong emphasis on collaboration and innovation in education. Within the team, there is room to share ideas, contribute to curriculum development, and play an active role in advancing academic communication skills.

About you

You enjoy helping students grow and know how to create a positive and engaging learning environment, where a sense of humor is just as important as clear guidance. You collaborate easily with colleagues and contribute actively to a team-oriented way of working. In your teaching, you think creatively and continuously look for ways to improve and develop the curriculum. You understand the communication challenges students face within a medical and scientific context and know how to guide them effectively.

In addition, you bring:

  • A background in academic communication skills or a degree in English.
  • Preferably experience in teaching academic communication or English for Academic Purposes.
  • Near-native proficiency in English.
